Many teachers fail do a good job in the classroom because they do not have the ability to maintain a good classroom environment. A teacher must establish and maintain a positive classroom environment from day one. How does a teacher achieve this? From day one, students must learn and understand what the rules are in class. The teacher must reinforce such rules consistently. During the first week of school, the teacher must go over the classroom and school rules every day, making sure students fully understand what is expected of them. Managing classroom behavior starts from day one and has to continue everyday, all day long.

There were many empty tables in this library, which was shaped like a theater in the round. I noticed that a middle-aged woman in a brown dress, her hair in a bun, was quietly standing beside me. As I looked at her she gestured to me to follow her. Joy never looked up from her books. I followed the woman down some stairs toward the center of the theater. In the center of the stage was a brightly glowing, golden pyramid, about fifteen to eighteen feet high. There was an open trapezoidal shaped door in the center of one side. Beside the door stood a blonde, blue-eyed, tall thin man wearing only a loin cloth.

This often works well because they will accept ownership of the rules. A few simple rules are easy to enforce and easily understood by the class.

It, like all of Esalen, is a happening and a place to work through stuff in one’s life. Some classes teach the elderly how they can now move — more slowly or differently and with less or no pain. The flavor of Esalen ranges from intense focused Tantric workshops — a gazing into your future mates eyes or an early morning meeting by Esalen’s staff to a room filled with canvas’s and artists to people clobbering each other with pillows or making strange noises or movements. The space is clean and clear (cleaned after every workshop at least) and infinitely higher vibrationally than ordinary existence (fast food restaurants and most of the places I use to hang out).
I was raised not to call people “out of their name”. My grandmother named me David, after the great Hebrew patriarch. She taught me that my name meant ‘beloved’ and not to let folks shorten or alter it. “Dave did not slay Goliath”, she admonished. “Nor was Dave king of Israel.” She explained names often carried the weight of expectation. What you called others was as important as anything else you could say to them was her belief. More vital, though, was what we allowed others to call us. Hence, my edict.

This is a woman who would triple-lock her bedroom door living in a convent (probably to ward off any lesbian nuns). When I became a lawyer, she suggested I change my last name and pretend to be gentile, because “law firms might not like the Jews.” I informed her that in fact many of the most prominent law firms had Jewish names, but my mother wrote that off to an “attempt to be politically correct.” According to her, those Jews were probably just figureheads. Apparently the Pope is the real mastermind behind the American legal system.
The first day of the new school year began with Algebra II my tenth grade year. The teacher wanted to assign us seats for us on where to sit. I was a little advanced with mathematics, so I was taking classes one year ahead of time. This young woman, whom I actually met for a few moments a couple months beforehand, was assigned to sit in the back row. For whatever reason, I wasn’t on the roster, so I was last to be seated. The seats were full, so the teacher assigned me to the back row, next to the young woman.
