I no longer visit race tracks. My life was really spiralling out of control.</p><p class=”mol-para-with-font”>I started gambling when I was very young, playing fruit machines in a social club in Swansea on the council estate where I grew up and used to work for £5 a night collecting glasses.</p><p class=”mol-para-with-font”>At 11, 12, 13 you never realise then this is leading to something that will get out of control.</p><p class=”mol-para-with-font”>I don’t know for certain but believe the gambling and how it was running my life had a big impact on me becoming very ill.</p><p class=”mol-para-with-font”>When you start earning big money and becoming recogniseable you don’t want to be going into bookies so open accounts.
I had my first when I moved to Arsenal from Luton. At one stage had several.</p><p class=”mol-para-with-font”>At others I’d wake up and my first thought would be ‘where’s the nearest bookie?’ or ‘where’s my phone?’ and I’d want to get to the TV and look at the odds.
I’d have three kids downstairs waiting to go to school. It’s mental.</p><div class=”artSplitter mol-img-group” style=”style”> <div class=”mol-img” style=”height: auto;”> <div class=”image-wrap”></noscript> </div> <p class=”imageCaption”>I know 100 per cent if I’d continued gambling I’d have ended up either being in jail or dead</p></div><p class=”mol-para-with-font”>My rock bottom point was when my wife Sarah said she could no longer stay and watch me put myself through what I was.</p><p class=”mol-para-with-font”>I broke down, pleaded with her like I had before but knew this time it was real.</p><p class=”mol-para-with-font”>I’d have lost everything because my family and children are my world.</p><p class=”mol-para-with-font”>It frightened and shook me up so I went on the computer, found a local Gamblers Anonymous in Swansea on October 5, 2011 and have not placed a single bet since.</p><p class=”mol-para-with-font”>GA got me through it and saved my life because it gave me life.
An opportunity to enjoy life without this addiction hanging over me. I still go to meetings now and feel huge relief every time.</p><p class=”mol-para-with-font”>I’ve managed to turn it around and I’m very proud of that. I always say ‘clear mind, clear path’ and lots of doors have now opened like my ambassador role with Ladbrokes.</p><div class=”artSplitter mol-img-group” style=”style”> <div class=”mol-img”> <div class=”image-wrap”>

They have withdrawn all their sponsorship and advertisement from sport. This is their last year sponsoring the SPL. They want governing bodies to do the same and stop ploughing all this gambling sponsorship into football and sport.</p><p class=”mol-para-with-font”>When I found out their intentions it was a great opportunity and they like how I got myself clean through adversity.</p><p class=”mol-para-with-font”>Gambling is a huge problem in society and sport.
Lots of people are suffering and have to find a way to get out of the mess.</p><p class=”mol-para-with-font”>I hope when people read my story they will take something from it.
